#2080 January 2010

State police found the body of 59-year-old Dean Pierson in his Copake barn on Thursday [January 21, 2010]. A visitor found a note Pierson had left on the barn door that said not to come in and to call police. (huffingtonpost.com)

A trooper who responded and came to the scene found the victim and 51 cows dead inside their milking stalls. Neighbors of Pierson later dug a large trench near the barn and buried the dead cows there. They did not want to comment on the incident... (inquisitr.com)

Trooper Charles Butenhoff arrived at the scene. Capt. Scott Brown (New York State Police) said Pierson was efficient and selective, only killing the milk cows, leaving his heifers and calves to survive. Brown, Bureau of Criminal Investigations Investigator Kelly Taylor, Investigator Abdul Weed and Sgt. Station Commander Kimberly Adriance then responded to the scene. “The investigation did reveal he was having personal issues,” Brown said. “It was a very unusual, bizarre case. And it’s unfortunate. We handle numerous suicides a year but nothing like this." (registerstar.com)

"Dean had no help on the farm and he worked really hard to do it all himself," neighbor Susan Kiernan told the Times Union. He left no suicide note, said his wife, Gwynneth, who was home at the time of the shootings but heard nothing. She wants to figure out a way to keep the farm going. (seattletimes.nwsource.com)
